Mindfulness

“The Pilates Method of Body Conditioning is complete coordination of body, mind and spirit.” – Joseph Pilates

In this world of fast-paced-distractions-everywhere-chaos, people often look for a place to relax, calm and be tranquil.

When you think of mindfulness you might straight away picture a Buddhist Monk, but people are wrong to only vision one way to mindfulness.

Pilates is a proven way to rest both your mind and body, whilst making a connection between them. Pilates can help to sharpen the mind, relieve stress, reduce negative emotions and lower blood pressure. Amongst other benefits, these are clearly helpful to our health.

Pilates allows you to concentrate on one thing, your body, every movement and every muscle. You can gain the benefits of mindfulness meditation without sitting still and probably feeling like you’re wasting your time. Cleanse the mind whilst exercising your body, best of both worlds!

Pilates For Christmas

With Christmas coming up, do you know someone who would love Pilates lessons as a gift? Whether they’ve been doing Pilates for a long time, or they have always wanted to, but never taken that step, our Gift Vouchers could be the perfect present this festive season. It could even be a surprise gift for someone who has never really even heard of Pilates but you think they could benefit from it. Perhaps they suffer pain, have poor posture or are simply live a hectic lifestyle and could do with regular breaks of focus and concentration.

Please contact Jakki at Purely Pilates North East to book a class or purchase a voucher.

Pilates is for life, not just for Christmas.

Fight or Flight

A new study, undertaken by scientists at the University of Pittsburgh has discovered that Pilates might be effective at beating stress due to the movements used calming a part of the brain linked to the fight-or-flight response.

The scientists found a circuit which links the brain to the ‘adrenal mudulla’ which is the inner part of the adrenal gland. This triggers an adrenaline surge during stressful situations. The same brain network was also found to be connected to the brain’s motor cortex which governs movement.

Life is full of stress, we know this. It causes effects on the body like a pounding heart, sweating and dilated pupils, but also triggers a cognitive surge allowing for a quick summing up of the situation. If someone insults you, you probably don’t want to either run away or punch them in the face. You may wish to let it wash over you, or come back with a thought out response. Pilates is great for stress management.

Pilates & Cycling

Many sports people never thought of incorporating Pilates into their training sessions, they thought it was perhaps irrelevent or wouldn’t work for them. But more & more athletes are turning to Pilates for help. The basic benefits of Pilates can assist over a number of sports, including cycling.

  • Riding with a strong core helps to transfer more power to the pedals. It provides a solid platform for the lower body to push against.
  • Exercising and strengthening the deep intrinsic muscles of the abdomen and spine, takes pressure off the superficial muscles. Combine this with a focus on alignment and torso stability which will support you along those long rides.
  • Many riders complain about lower back pain, Pilates is an excellent way for cyclists to acquire more core strength which helps support the lower back.
  • Pilates helps you be in tune with your body, be more self aware about what each part is doing, both on and off the bike. This allows you to correct the things that will increase your speed, power and enjoyment on the bike.

So there are just a few examples of how Pilates can benefit cyclists. Bradley Wiggins has been quoted as saying “I focus on strengthening my core for 30 minutes each day.” It’s best not to argue with the Tour De France winner, Velo d’Or winner & multiple gold medallist! Strengthen that core with Pilates!

Pilates For Sciatica

Many people suffer from sciatica, but many others don’t know what it is. Sciatica is… “pain affecting the back, hip, and outer side of the leg, caused by compression of a spinal nerve root in the lower back, often owing to degeneration of an intervertebral disc.”

Did you know that the sciatic nerve is one of the largest nerves in body?

With sciatica, every injury is different so what might work & relieve pain for some, might not work & cause more pain for others, so it’s crucial to work with a qualified instructor. As well as Pilates classes, regular Pilates exercises are beneficial, wherever you are, at home, or even at work.

Jakki at Purely Pilates North East (qualifications include Specialists Backcare Level 4 Advanced) can undertake one on one pilates classes for sciatica, to target pain & help improve it. It might be a long process, but each little step will help. Let’s get you enjoying movement, without pain.

The Mind/Body Connection

“The complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.”

Pilates allows you to increase your mind/body connection as you fully engage in each movement with total intention. At first, it might be difficult, letting yourself drop into a state where you feel every muscle movement & understand your positioning, but allowing yourself get past that self conscious phase will benefit your pilates journey.

You’ll release muscle tension as you stretch, getting rid of built up stress, whilst boosting those endorphins which we all know make us feel good. If you don’t feel in particularly good about life, perhaps feel down or upset about how things are going, your sense of mastery will be increased helping you to feel in control. It also provides a distraction from worries as you focus deeply. Sleep is so important for the rest & recovery of the body & mind & after pilates is always pretty awesome as your energy has been expended. Of course, improving your health & body can only lift your mood. It’s all good!

Come & start your pilates journey at Purely Pilates North East. Our new term starts in September, we hope to see you then!
